2013 Newsletters

Hello Woodturners,                                                                        May 8, 2013

This is an early (by one week) reminder that the next meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. is coming up Saturday after next, May 18, 2013.  I plan to be out of town next week and will not have a way to send out a notice during the week before the meeting, as I usually do.  The meeting location is the usual place and directions are below near the end of this notice for guest and anyone else who has not attended recently.

I do want everyone to know that this next meeting will be a real treat for those able to attend.  We will have a special guest demonstrator, Capt. Eddie CastalinHe is President of the Bayou Woodturners Club located in New Orleans, LA.

To most of us, Capt. Eddie is a legend in his own time.  To learn more you can watch his many videos on You Tube, or through this web site: http://eddiecastelin.com/capn_youtube_gallery .

Sorry I don't have any more specific details about what he is planning to show us but I will send them later, if I receive them in time.  I might add that this will be a good meeting to bring a guest who is interested in woodturning but has not yet made the move.

We will start the meeting at 9:30 a.m. and, as usual, the door will be open earlier so maybe you can be early enough to have coffee, begin socializing and help set up.  Meetings usually end early to mid afternoon.  Do bring a guest!!

Treasurer Archie Lancaster is accepting dues for Calendar Year 2013.  He requests that dues be paid by check, if possible, as it is easier for him to record and keep track since his computer is still not working.  Also let him know about any changes in your email address, home address, or telephone number so you can receive meeting reminders via email.  Dues are $35.00 for the calendar year.  Dues may be mailed to Archie at home: Archie Lancaster, 5325 Balmoral Drive, Jackson, MS 39211.

I had a call recently from member Frank Lee to tell me that a friend he knows has an older lathe for sale that was not used very much and appears to be in excellent condition. The friend would like to get rid of it because it is just taking up space.  It is a Delta Model 46-700 complete with the metal stand and several turning tools.  It is located near Petal and the owner is Sharron Hurley (601)545-1332. If you do not reach her at that number you might call Frank at (601)579-7372.  The asking price is $400.

Member Roland Pimm told me he has a Porter Cable air compressor unit that is missing a motor and several minor parts. It does have a good 20 gallon tank and a good two cylinder compressor and he would like to find someone who can use it for free. He can bring it to the meeting if anyone is interested and you can call him at: (228)239-0731.

Member and Web Master, Gerald Lawrence, tells me the club’s web site is up and running, though still under construction. The url is: http:\\ www.Magnoliawoodturners.org. He says all the tabs are working but are still very very slow.(you might want to open another tab while waiting) When members try to log into the secure tab he will have to verify that you are a paid member and then you will be asked to provide other information that only other members will have access to.

As always, you are encouraged to bring extra turning wood you can't use and share with others having a need for same. Also, if you know of an available wood source and would like some assistance in harvesting, you probably will find someone who would like to help.

Member Lamar Kelly invites you to check out his Facebook site featuring Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. meeting photos and albums.  He has it set up so anyone can view it whether or not you have a Facebook account.  You can go to your favorite search engine and type in “Magnolia Woodturners, Inc”.  You can also cut and paste this link to get there: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Magnolia-Woodturners-Inc/229435957117655

As member of Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. you are encouraged to become a member of our national organization, the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). Details can be obtained at this meeting. Details about AAW’s liability insurance for affiliates discussed at the last meeting have been worked out and our club will pay $90 per year to be covered. More details when they become available.

Our meetings take place at the COPIAH-LINCOLN COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIMPSON CO.  CENTER.   This facility is on the East side of US 49, (but cannot be seen from the highway) between Mendenhall and Magee. If you are driving south, you will see an information sign on the right shoulder of US 49 and that is when and where you turn left (East) at crossover and into the driveway.    If you see Simpson Legion Lake on your left, then you have passed it. If you are driving north and pass the lake, look for a complementary sign showing you to take the next right.

Safe Turning,
Below I have "cut and pasted" the response from Capt. Eddie to a statement in my meeting notice, yesterday.

"Cap'n Eddie here, I'll be turning a Coriolis ring (wooden art piece)  Wooden bottle stopper cap, super thin turning for the top of a hat (with rigs and jigs) and a few more items.  I'll also have a few door prizes of tools and cutter packages and be selling tools and cutters without freight charges.

One note that I forgot to mention is that tentatively,  for the October meeting Michael Frazier will be holding another "Open House" in his shop and in November Michael Pridgen will be inviting us back to his shop.  Two outstanding shops for more great meetings to look forward to!

Below is a copy of an email from Dr Hartwig forwarding an invitation (see attachment) to all of you to attend a Hattiesburg Arts Council special showing of many wood turning works by Bill Mason. Hello Woodturners,                                                          June 11, 2013

This is your notice for the next meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. this coming Saturday June 15, 2013.  For those of you who wish to visit our meeting or have not attended a meeting at this new excellent facility I am including my blurb below to help you find it.

“The meeting will be at the COPIAH-LINCOLN COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIMPSON CO.  CENTER.  All future regular meetings will be held at this new facility, unless you are notified otherwise.  The new place is on the East side of US 49, (but cannot be seen from the highway) between Mendenhall and Magee. If you are driving south, you will see this sign on the right of US 49 and that is when you turn left (East) at the crossover and into the driveway. If you see Simpson Legion Lake on your left, then you have passed it. If you are driving north and pass the lake, look for the complementary sign showing you to take the next right.”

We will start the meeting at 9:30 a.m. but as usual the door will be open earlier so maybe you can be early enough to have coffee, begin socializing and help set up.  Meetings usually end early to mid afternoon. Bring a guest!!

It is time to register on the new Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. Web site.      (   magnoliawoodturners .org )  Work is still being done on the web site, but the section of the web site that only members will have access to is working now.  You will have to go to the site and register and be validated and it does take some time.  Here is the message from Gerald:

“Clyde, I will not make this week’s meeting. Please make photos for me and when I get them I will put on website.
Notice for club: Photos up as far back as April 2011. Bring or send me other shot you may have of meetings and I will download.
Please go to website and register. To do this go to any page other than home and at the lower right corner is a register/login button.
Would like to start a classified listing. If you have woodworking related items for sale or trade I am thinking that we will try as a 6 month posting and ask that you contact me to remove if sold.

Thanks, Gerald Lawrence” (Gerald Lawrence <lawr1970@bellsouth.net>)

We have two excellent wood turners, Buddy Overby and Terry Tjader, who will be demonstrating the turning of art of “inside out” turnings.  These will be interesting and different because they are working independently on their parts of the program.  Also, you are guaranteed to have a lively and fun meeting with these two men.

Treasurer Archie Lancaster is accepting dues for Calendar Year 2013.  He requests that dues be paid by check, if possible, as it is easier for him to record and keep track since his computer is not working.  Payment of dues is running later this year than in the past, so please try to get them to Archie and support our club.  Also let him know about any changes in your email address, home address, or telephone number.  Dues are $35.00 for the calendar year.  Dues may be mailed to Archie at home: Archie Lancaster, 5325 Balmoral Drive, Jackson, MS 39211.

Please remember to return borrowed Library items.  By having monthly meetings in the same place, the turnaround time on Library items should be about half as long as before, plus we do really have an excellent selection of items in our Library for paid up members.  Please remember to sign all items in as well as out when you borrow as it is an honor system and this is the only we can keep up with items you borrow.  Ask someone if you have any questions, please.

As always, you are encouraged to bring extra turning wood you can't use and share with others having a need for same. Also, if you know of an available wood source and would like some assistance in harvesting, you just might find someone who would like to help.

For the Jackson area, Carpooling is the new way to go!  I personally spoke to the manager at Sutherlands Building Materials store located at 717 Hwy 80 East Pearl, MS 39208 the latter part of last year and he assured me we can park our vehicles in the parking lot there for carpooling purposes to attend our meetings on the third Saturday of each month. Call someone or just show up there not later than 8:30 a.m.! You may live in another area and would like to carpool. I will be happy to get the word out if you will send me the details. Remember, if you are not the driver in a carpool, probably you should offer to kick in a few bucks to pay towards the gas.

This month I have suffered the ultimate humiliation when my hard drive totally crashed and I discovered I had not backed up since early February of this year.  Now, if you have not experienced this you should know that everything on a computer since it was backed up disappears forever. For example, the contact list, word processing, spread sheet, address book, etc. files are the same ones I had in February on my new hard drive..   I don’t yet have a copy of meeting notices since January or of the roster I sent out early last month. I will see you Saturday and next month things will be better.

Safe Turning,

Clyde

Hello Woodturners,                                                          July 16, 2013

Charlie White will have the honor of demonstrating one of his many wood turning skills by doing a natural edge bowl for us. Charlie is a great teacher and turner so we can learn from a master turner at this meeting.

We will have a business meeting to discuss options concerning future meeting locations, so please plan to attend.

For reasons that are not clear, we are experiencing a major problem with folks not paying their dues on time this year.  A lack of dues payers could seriously affect how we can operate in the future.  Treasurer Archie Lancaster is accepting dues for Calendar Year 2013.  He requests that dues be paid by check, if possible, as it is easier for him to record and keep track since his computer is not working.  Also let him know about any changes in your email address, home address, or telephone number.  Dues are $35.00 for the calendar year.  Dues may be mailed to Archie at home: Archie Lancaster, 5325 Balmoral Drive, Jackson, MS 39211.

Hello Woodturners,

This is your notice for the next meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. this coming Saturday August 17, 2013.  For those of you who wish to visit our meeting or have not attended a meeting at this new excellent facility I am including my blurb below to help you find it.  Please note that we are not changing meeting locations as we had anticipated.

We will start the meeting at 9:30 a.m. but as usual the door will be open earlier so maybe you can be early enough to have coffee, begin socializing and help set up.  Meetings usually end early to mid afternoon. Bring a guest!!

It is time for all paid members to register on the new Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. Web site:( magnoliawoodturners.org ) .  Work is still being done on the web site, but the section of the web site reserved for “members only” is working now.  You will have to go to the site, submit your registration, which is validated according to the member roster.  This may take some time if Gerald is not on line when you submit your registration request. You will receive a notice when registration is complete.

This month we will see the results and hear a report from several of the five MWI members who, earlier this month, spent several days at the Appalachian Center for Crafts located near Smithville, Tennessee with wood artist Dixie Biggs;  http://dixiebiggs.com/ .

Also, you will see some basic woodturning tool sharpening techniques.  Especially for newer and less experienced members, please bring a few of your own tools you would like help getting really sharp by some of our experienced turners, as time permits. There is a wide range of opinions on what works best so this should be a good learning experience for newer turners.

Also, you will see how bowl blanks can be mounted on your lathe for basic bowl turning on the lathe.

Below is a message from Terry which probably will only be understood by those for whom it is intended, so here goes:
“Clyde, I have invited three guys interested in our club to this weekend’s meeting. I have a prior early morning engagement so will not be meeting at the carpool location as usual; however I will be at the meeting. We normally meet between 7:45 and leave at 8:00AM, from the Lake Terrace Convention Center. When you turn into the center from Hwy 49 we meet to the right after the stop sign. If the new members and the afore mention prospects want to carpool they can meet there. We generally kick in a few dollars for gas to the driver. If you will add this to the news letter I would appreciate it, Terry”

Please bring several pieces of your turned work for Show and Tell.

For reasons that are not clear, we are experiencing a major problem with folks not paying their dues on time this year.  A lack of dues payers could seriously affect how we can operate in the future. Come on back guys, we are going to be meeting here for a long time and your are missing some really good sessions!

Please remember to return borrowed Library items as we do have an excellent selection of items covering nearly all types of woodturning, and several other related topics, for paid up members.  Please remember to sign in and out all items as it is an honor system and this is the only way we can keep up with items.  Ask someone if you have any questions, please.

Hello Woodturners,

This is your notice for the next meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. this coming Saturday; September 21, 2013.  For those of you who wish to visit our meeting or have not attended a meeting at this new excellent facility I am including my blurb below to help you find it.  Please note that we are not changing meeting locations as we had anticipated.

Check out our evolving website:( http://magnoliawoodturners.org/) .  Work is still being done on the web site, but webmaster, Gerald Lawrence, is adding content to make it more personalized for our members. The number of links provided on the website will surely impress you as everything you need to know about woodturning is right there.

Our agenda for this meeting was developed by member Michael Frazier and he has included several items that are new that we have not done before.  The really different one is the auction.  Michael has provided pictures of items he is donating (see below) and in order to make it really work he is asking all of you to look around and bring a shop item, woodturning or otherwise and donate it for the auction. It can be anything you really don’t use, need, or will ever get around to selling anyhow.  We all have them so please donate something and consider it a gift to the club.  We will have raffle tickets for sale and all proceeds will go in the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. treasury. Also, note the raffle is scheduled for after lunch so it is going to be a full fun day.  He is also asking anyone to bring a leaf(s) from any tree species and he will show us how to us an iPhone app. to identify the tree. He was kind enough to type up the agenda he developed and I have “cut and pasted” it below.

“From: Michael Frazier <mwfrazier01@gmail.com>
  To: clyde hare <cfhare@att.net>

I have attached pictures of three items that I will be donating to the club raffle next meeting.

1-     Unique Tools carbide turning tool.

2-     Small Delta disc/belt sander

3-     Delta 3/4 HP slow speed complete grinder and buffing wheels

All items are used and in good working order.

I hope some others will clean out their shop and consider giving up some stuff that they will never use and stop hoarding. :-)

Tim Pace and Lamar Kelly are going to turn some misc. items that will be colored for the demo and I will bring samples also. Grain enhancement & coloring techniques work best on the following woods: Ash, Chestnut, Elm, Hickory, and Oak.

I hope Lester brings the donuts as usual. I look forward to the treats each month. I can’t get Shipley's around here.

I’m bringing two buffing systems for the demo and a 32 inch flat screen TV for the leaf identification demo.

I challenge someone to bring a unusual leaf from a tree (not shrubs or house plants)

“only trees please”

As usual our members are pretty good at harassing the demo guy so I hope to see someone bring a rare leaf for identification and try to “stump the chump”

We will see how good this leaf identification app. works.

The iPhone leaf identification app has over 2590 leaf pictures in the database.

‘Tis the season to think about turning your own unique Christmas ornaments.  The theme for this month is “turning ornaments on the lathe”.  Charlie White, Sammy Long, and Roland Pimm will be our demonstrators for this meeting.  Each one doing something a little different.   Of course, you are encouraged to discuss all aspects of turning each component with the demonstrators.  It is really not too difficult to pick the right materials and do the basics, after your see it done live.  Family and friends really do seem to appreciate handmade Christmas ornaments because they are personal and can be used year after year!  We like to do this each year, so this is your opportunity  to get started on time to get it done.

Please don't forget to bring samples of your turned work for “Show and Tell”

Check out our evolving website :( http://magnoliawoodturners.org/) .  Work is still being done on the website, but webmaster Gerald Lawrence is expanding the content to make it more helpful as well as personalized for our members who can sign in to a special section. The number of links provided on the website will surely impress you as everything you need to know about woodturning is right there.

Michael Frazier ask me to remind all you woodturners that he and his wife invite everyone, including spouses, etc. to his place the last Saturday in this month (October 26, 2013) for a friendly get together.  You are invited to come and stay as long as you like and there will be food throughout the day.   They plan to be ready to get things underway about 9:00 a.m.  Their address is 192 Magnolia Springs, Florence , MS and Michael’s phone number is (601)573-7280, if you have any questions. (try Google maps)

Treasurer Archie Lancaster is still accepting dues for Calendar Year 2013 for new and latish members.

As always, you are encouraged to bring extra turning wood you can’t use and share with others having a need for same. Also, if you know of an available wood source and would like some assistance in harvesting, you likely will find someone who would like to help.

Remember, if you are not the driver in a carpool, you should offer to kick in a few bucks to pay on the gas because gas prices are still too high.

For the Hattiesburg area, New Carpooling location! From Terry Tjader…  “We normally meet between 7:45 and leave at 8:00AM, from the Lake Terrace Convention Center. When you turn into the center from Hwy 49 we meet to the right after the stop sign. We generally kick in a few dollars for gas to the driver.”

Safe Turning,

Clyde

Hello Woodturners,

This is your notice for the next meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. Saturday; November 16, 2013.  For those of you who wish to visit our meeting or have not attended a meeting at this excellent facility I am including my blurb below to help you find it.

“The meeting will be at the COPIAH-LINCOLN COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIMPSON CO. CENTER.  All future regular meetings will be held at this facility, unless you are notified otherwise.  The facility is on the East side of US 49, (but cannot be seen from the highway) between Mendenhall and Magee.

Check out our still evolving website :( http://magnoliawoodturners.org/).  Webmaster, Gerald Lawrence, is adding content every month to make it more personalized for our members. The large number of links provided on the website will surely impress you, as everything you need to know about woodturning and more is right there.

Our turning demonstrations this month will be by members Randy New and Don Ritchey.  Randy will turn one of his special wooden scoops.  Randy is fun and fast turning at the lathe and you may come away feeling a desire to go home and duplicate his scoop for Christmas presents.

Don is going to add a new dimension to our turning demonstrations that we have never seen before.  He will begin with the first phase of a four part demonstration that will cover four monthly meeting demonstrations to complete.  The completed project will be an old fashion telephone.  Now, you will be challenged to make this project in your shop over the next several months using instructions learned from these demonstrations. Don will provide details, including handouts, at the meeting so please try to see this project as it gets underway next Saturday morning.

Please bring several pieces of your turned work for Show and Tell.

 Hello MWI Members,

At our meeting, this month, it was agreed that the club would hold an election for officers for Calendar Year 2014.  The nominating committee has put forth a slate of nominees for the offices of President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.  The actual election will take place at our January 2014 meeting at the usual location. Other nominees from the 2013 membership may be nominated from the floor at that time prior to the voting.  Normally, elections are held in November but because there was not a nominating committee and no candidates at that time the election did not happen.  The slate proposed by the nominating committee is the following members who have agreed to serve.

President -- Michael Frazier
Vice President -- Richard Manning
Secretary -- Lamar Kelly
Treasurer -- Gerald Lawrence

Newly elected officers will assume their duties effective immediately after the election is completed.

It was also decided that MWI would apply to be covered under the AAW liability insurance.  It was proposed and agreed that the club donate one or more turnings to our host and staff (secretary) as a good will gesture.

Please try to make it to this January meeting as we want to move forward and make plans for the coming year. As you probably all know, we do not meet in December because of other things going on during the Christmas season.
