2014 Newsletters

Hello Woodturners, 1/14/2014

This is your notice for first meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. in Calendar Year 2014  This will be next Saturday; January 18, 2014.  The meeting will be at the COPIAH-LINCOLN COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIMPSON CO. CENTER. The facility is on the East side of US 49, (but cannot be seen from the highway) between Mendenhall and Magee. If you are driving south, you will see this sign on the right of US 49 and that is when you turn left (East) at the crossover and into the driveway. If you see Simpson Legion Lake on your left, then you have passed it. If you are driving north and pass the lake, look for the complementary sign showing you to take the next right.

We will start the meeting at 9:30 a.m. but as usual the door will be open earlier so maybe you can be early enough to have coffee, begin socializing and help set up.  Meetings usually end early to mid afternoon. Bring a guest!!

We will elect officers for Calendar Year 2014 at this meeting.  We failed to have an election in November, as was traditionally done.  The offices to be filled are the President, Vice President, Secretary, and Treasurer.  At the last meeting, a nomination committee was formed to develop a slate of candidates from the 2013  membership for those positions. The following folks have agreed to be nominated for the respective offices: Michael Frazier, Richard Manning, Lamar Kelly, and Gerald Lawrence.  The floor will be open for any additional nominations for any of these offices.  Next will be open discussions, campaign speeches, etc., and then voting by members in good standing in 2013.  If there are no additional  nominations the slate as a group may be voted on.  Successful candidates will assume their respective duties immediately after the election is over.

This, being the first gathering of Calendar Year 2014, means dues for the coming year are payable now. Please plan to bring your $35 dollars and help us get off to a good start.

We are very fortunate to again have members Randy New and Don Ritchey doing the turning demonstrations at this meeting.  Randy will have a surprise demonstration for us, so look surprised when he tells us what it will be. Seriously, we have seen him in action several times and his demonstrations and workmanship a treat to watch and learn from.

At our last meeting in November, Don introduced us to a four part demonstration for making an old fashion candlestick telephone and also completed the first phase.  He gave out a detailed drawing to those attending the meeting so they could complete that phase at home.  He challenged everyone in the club to make this entire project over the next several months, using handout drawings and the monthly meeting demonstrations. (A copy of that handout was sent to member via email from me, so we all should have a copy of the first phase to work from if your missed that meeting.) Don will demonstrate how to complete phase two at this meeting,

Check out our still evolving website :( http://magnoliawoodturners.org/).  Webmaster, Gerald Lawrence, is adding content every month to make it more personalized for our members. The large number of links provided on the website will surely impress you, as everything you need to know about woodturning and more is right there.

Please bring several pieces of your turned work for Show and Tell.

Recently, talented member Terry Tjader entered the South Mississippi Art Association's 37TH Annual Art Show And Sale. His Cedar Hollow Form won a Second prize Ribbon in the 2D-3D Category.  Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. also has other talented members who probably should be entering their turnings in more judged exhibitions.

Member Gerald Lawrence sent me this message: "Delta Midi lathe for sale. Model LA200. Complete with bed extension. Attached to wooden weighted stand. Excellent condition only 7 years old and little use except as buffer station  for last 3 years.  Price $250.Gerald Lawrence, phone 769-230-6822  Brandon." (I would say that your need to call early as this is one excellent offer!)

Please remember to return borrowed Library items as we do have an excellent selection of items covering nearly all types of woodturning, and several other related topics, for paid up members.  Please remember to sign in and out all items as it is an honor system and this is the only way we can keep up with items.  Ask someone if you have any questions, please.

As always, you are encouraged to bring extra turning wood you can't use and share with others having a need for same. Also, if you know of an available wood source and would like some assistance in harvesting, you likely will find someone who would like to help.

For the Jackson area, Carpooling is the new way to go!  I personally spoke to the manager at Sutherlands Building Materials store located at 717 Hwy 80 East Pearl, MS 39208 early last year and he assured me we can park our vehicles in the parking lot there for carpooling purposes to attend our meetings on the third Saturday of each month. Call someone or just show up there not later than 8:30 a.m.! Remember, if you are not the driver in a carpool, you should offer to kick in a few bucks to pay towards the gas because gas prices are still too high.

For the Hattiesburg area, New Carpooling location! From Terry Tjader.--  We normally meet between 7:45 and leave at 8:00AM, from the Lake Terrace Convention Center. When you turn into the center from Hwy 49 we meet to the right after the stop sign. We generally kick in a few dollars for gas to the driver.

Hope  to see all of your at the meeting.

Safe Turning

Hello Woodturners,

This is your notice for the next meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. this coming Saturday; February 15, 2014.   For those of you who wish to visit our meetings or have not attended a meeting, I am including my blurb below to help you find it.  It is a very short drive South of Jackson on US 49.

“The meeting will be at the COPIAH-LINCOLN COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIMPSON CO.  CENTER.  All future regular meetings will be held at this new facility, unless you are notified otherwise.  The new place is on the East side of US 49, (but cannot be seen from the highway) between Mendenhall and Magee. If you are driving south, you will see this sign on the right of US 49 and that is when you turn left (East) at the crossover and into the driveway. If you see Simpson Legion Lake on your left, then you have passed it. If you are driving north and pass the lake, look for the complementary sign showing you to take the next right. “

We will start the meeting at 9:30 a.m., but as usual, the door will be open earlier so maybe you can make it earlier; have coffee; begin socializing; and help set up.  Meetings usually end early to mid afternoon. We welcome the new members who joined at the meeting last month.  Bring a guest and your name tag!

Please don't forget to bring examples of your turned work for “Show and Tell”.  This is always enjoyable and we learn from seeing and hearing about other members’ work, even when you bring pieces that didn't turnout as planned.

This month, member Don Ritchey will complete phases 3and 4 of the antique candlestick telephone.  These final steps will conclude Don’s demonstration.  We really appreciate the efforts of members like Don, who is from Cleveland and Randy New from Glen Allen for regularly making the long trips and contributing so much to the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. meetings.  Both of them did outstanding demonstrations last months at our meeting.

Check out our evolving website :( http://magnoliawoodturners.org/) .  Gerald Lawrence who is both Treasurer and the webmaster says the website is fully up and running.  However, the segment for “member registration” is temporarily unavailable.  There is a lot of good information available there for anyone who enjoys woodturning.

Secretary Lamar Kelly invites you to check out his Facebook site featuring Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. meeting photos and albums.  He has it set up so anyone can view it whether or not you have a Facebook account.  You can go to your favorite search engine and type in “Magnolia Woodturners, Inc”. You can also cut and paste this link to get there: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Magnolia-Woodturners-Inc/229435957117655

As member of Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. you are encouraged to become a member of our national organization, the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). Details can be obtained at this meeting.

Everyone who has not renewed their membership for this year may send dues ($35) to Gerald at: 103 Copperridge Dr., Brandon, MS 39042.  Better yet, bring your check to the meeting Saturday morning.  Please take time to complete the registration form for Gerald.   Also, please let him know about any new changes in your email address, home address, or telephone number(s) if they occur during the year.  If you took a name tag home, try to remember to wear it Saturday and it you don't have one, Gerald makes those for us, also.

Please remember to return borrowed Library items as we do have an excellent selection of items covering nearly all types of woodturning, and several other related topics, for paid up members.  Please remember to sign in and out all items as it is an honor system and this is the only way we can keep up with items. Ask someone if you have any questions, please.

Because of the volume/bulk of our library and the fact that it has to be stored in someone’s home and transported to each meeting, there is a need to eliminate much of the VHS tapes and other less popular items. Some books, CDs and DVDs are the most often checked out.  If you have other suggestions as to what can be done to help out please let it be known.

As always, you are encouraged to bring extra turning wood you can’t use and share with others having a need for same. Also, if you know of an available wood source and would like some assistance in harvesting,  you likely will find someone who would like to help.  I talked to one person already planning to bring free wood

We have a full program planned for the meeting.  Bob Vaughn with likely Joe Sanders from the Lighthouse Woodturners Club will present and demonstrate the Rose Engine Lathe constructed by them several years ago.  This type lathe is also known as a Ornamental Lathe.  If you do not know this type lathe, I suggest you search http://www.youtube.com/ and become familiar with it. Member Tim Pace will show us how to make a set of calipers and a parting tool from a certain kind of saw blade for use with your lathe, which you can make at home.  We will have an auction and you are asked to volunteer any tools, turning blanks, etc. you no longer need, and also included will be a “like new” CD copier and recorder which the club actually used only a couple of times.  This will be a fund raiser for the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. We do need to update our Library with new DVDs, etc. for our paid members this year.

Hello Woodturners                                                                  April 15, 2014

This is to remind you about the next meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) this coming Saturday April 19, 2014.  For those of you who wish to visit our meetings or have not attended a meeting at this excellent facility I am including my blurb near the end of this message to help you find it.

We will start the meeting at 9:30 a.m. but as usual the door will be open earlier so come have coffee, begin socializing and help set up.  Meetings usually end early to mid afternoon. Bring a guest!!

We have a special program for you this month.  Member Sammy Long will be explaining each of the steps used to turn a bowl, beginning with taking a chainsaw to a log to rough out a bowl blank;  correctly mounting the bowl blank on the lathe;  actually turning a thin bowl; and then demonstrate how he pierces a bowl.  Sammy is a master turner and instructor so you might want to bring your camera or video to capture how Sammy does each step.

Please don’t forget to bring examples of your turned work for “Show and Tell”.  This is always enjoyable and we learn from seeing and hearing about other members’ work, especially when you bring pieces that didn’t turnout as planned.

In my meeting notice last month I mentioned that our previous Treasurer Archie Lancaster was admitted to the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio for a coronary procedure to correct a valve problem.  He has experienced several post surgery complications, and is currently being treated for an infection of some type and his condition is critical but stable.  It is hoped he will be able to return to Jackson within a couple of weeks. Please remember Archie in your thoughts and prayers.

As always, you are encouraged to bring extra turning wood you can’t use and share with others having a need for same. Also, if you know of an available wood source and would like some assistance in harvesting, you are sure to find someone who would like to help.

Member Lamar Kelly invites you to check out his Facebook site featuring WMI meetings photos and albums.  He has it set up so anyone can view it whether or not you have a Facebook account.  You can go to your favorite search engine and type in “Magnolia Woodturners, Inc”. You can also cut and paste this link to get there: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Magnolia-Woodturners-Inc/229435957117655 .

Lamar sends a message that he will be bringing enough Boxelder wood, also known as ash-leaved maple, for everyone to have the opportunity to take one or more pieces. He plans to wait until everyone gets to the meeting before passing any of the pieces out to make sure everyone that wants a piece will get at least one.  (This is not the Mississippi species alleged someone tried to pass off to Binh Pho several years ago.)

Sammy told me that, if he has time (he starts back to work tomorrow), he also plans to bring a load of Boxelder wood to the meeting.  It is rare that we had two members planning to bring coveted green Boxelder wood to a meeting to share.

We would appreciate your dues for renewal this year at your earliest convenience. Everyone who has not renewed their membership for this year may send dues ($35) to Treasurer Gerald Lawrence at: 103 Copperridge Dr., Brandon, MS 39042.  Better yet, bring your check to the meeting Saturday morning.  Also, please take time to complete the registration form for Gerald and the website.   Please let him know about any changes in your email address, home address, or telephone number(s) if they occur during the year.

Email message from also Web master Gerald Lawrence regarding new additions to the MWI Web site:

As member of MWI you are encouraged to become a member of our national organization, the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). Details can be obtained at this meeting. Visit their website: http://www.woodturner.org/  It is money well spent whether you are a beginner or above and we need to support them because they support MWI.  If any of you plan to attend the AAW symposium in Phoenix, AZ this year please let me know.

Reminder: Earlier last month, I sent a message to many of you concerning plans by Dr. Geoffrey Hartwig for a tribute to late member Bill Mason at the AAW symposium this year.

“ Clyde,  As you know, Bill Mason died just a few weeks ago.  I have been in touch with Dale Larson, AAW president, about sponsoring a demonstration room at the upcoming Arizona meeting in memory of Bill.  I plan to get a picture of him and a brief story about his life and wood turning experience that will be presented in that room and perhaps elsewhere at the meeting in honor of him.  I would plan to acknowledge him as a member of the Magnolia chapter of the AAW.  I am working on this with Linda at the AAW offices.  Any thoughts?   If any of our members are going, I would appreciate some feedback about how this turns out since I don’t think I will make that meeting.  Geoff”

Since then, several of you have responded but if you have pictures or comments related to Bill and his work as a turner and maker of segmented items and have not, but would like to help commemorate Bill and his work please contact Dr. Hartwig.   Geoffrey.Hartwig <geoffrey.hartwig@hattiesburgclinic.com>  Also, please let him know if you are going to the symposium.

Earlier this week I received a package from Janice Mobray which contains a number of new items from her late husband member Mal Mobray’s turning supplies he did not get to use.  She ask if I thought someone in the club would like to have them and I told her we could use them in our next auction to raise funds for Magnolia Woodturners, Inc.  Thank you Janice!

This week I learned about a shop full of very fine wood working tools, machines, etc. that is for sale.  I plan to attach some pictures of a few of the machines to this message rather than include them in the body of this message because it is already much longer than usual.  The shop is located in Ridgeland, MS and will be fairly priced but only serious inquires are requested. In addition to the equipment shown there are too many other woodworking tools, to list i.e. large drill press, porter cable dovetail jig, routers, drills, etc..  I will give you the contact information if you are interested. Email or call me at (601)924-4275

For the Jackson area, Carpooling is the new way to go!  I personally spoke to the manager at Sutherlands Building Materials store located at 717 Hwy 80 East Pearl, MS 39208 several months ago and he assured me we may park our vehicles in the parking lot there for carpooling purposes to attend our meetings on the third Saturday of each month. Hello Woodturners                                                                  May 9, 2014

This is to remind you about the upcoming meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) Saturday after next, on May 17, 2014.  This is early because I will be out of pocket several days next week.

Last month we enjoyed watching member Sammy Long demonstrate all the steps from sawing a log, orienting the blank on the lathe, and actually turning a thin bowl.  We have another good turning lesson program coming up this time.  Whether or not you are experienced or have never tried to turn a “hollow vessel”, we are going to have a lot of fun and watch several of our seasoned turners demonstrating several popular/current methods and means to do it.  Each person will be encouraged to actually use the different hollowing tools and learn how to make long shavings and at the same time not end up with a funnel.  This will be a workshop with your own personal trainers. As you know, learning how to turn wood can be lot of fun and that is one of the main reasons we belong to Magnolia Woodturners, Inc..  Remember also, purchasing one wrong tool can cost you much more than our annual dues, so learn the way that works best for you and save big $$$$.

In June we will have a guest demonstrator that is a full time professional wood turner whose name is Dennis Paullus from Memphis, TN.    http://dennispaullus.blogspot.com/

Please don’t forget to bring examples of your turned work for “Show and Tell”.  This is always enjoyable and we learn from seeing and hearing about other members’ work, especially when you bring pieces that didn’t turnout as planned.  A lot of free wood found a new home at  the last meeting, so let’s see how some of it is being used.

In my two previous meeting notices I included updates on Archie Lancaster’s condition.  For this month I have good news.  Archie returned to Jackson yesterday and is recuperating at Select Specialty Hospital on Ridgewood Drive until he is able to return to his home.  His family is asking that he have no visitors or calls for the present time.  Please remember Archie and pray for his speedy recovery.

As always, you are encouraged to bring extra turning wood you can't use and share with others having a need for same.

Message just in from Gerald:  "
Good News. The web site links for HOW TO have all been verified and fixed. Will continue to work on other links and add links from my own bookmarks. Please note if you have favorites to add or problems let me know.  Also I cleaned up the Membership list and only PAID members show on this list.
Thanks; Gerald Lawrence Webmaster & Treasurer "

Please remember to return borrowed Library items as we do have an excellent selection of items covering nearly all types of woodturning, and several other related topics, for paid up members.  Please remember to sign in and out all items as it is an honor system and this is the only way we can keep up with items.  Ask someone if you have any questions, please.

Because of the volume/bulk of our total library and the fact that it has to be stored in someone’s home and transported to each meeting, there is a need to eliminate much of the VHS tapes and other less popular items. Some books, CDs and DVDs are the most often checked out materials and will continue to be available.  If you have other suggestions as to what can be done to help out please let it be known.

As member of MWI you are encouraged to become a member of our national organization, the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). Details can be obtained at this meeting. Visit their website: http://www.woodturner.org/ .  The website has been completely reworked with emphasis on education.  It is money well spent whether you are a beginner or above and we need to support them because they support MWI.  I still have not heard of any of our members going to the annual symposium in Phoenix, Arizona this coming July.

Hello Woodturners,

This is to remind you about the meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) next Saturday morning June 21, 2014.

We have been out of town attending a grandson's high school graduation and returned home last night.  While checking my email this afternoon I learned the sad news that member Archie Lancaster had passed away early last week. I don't check email when out of town.  I am including a link to Archie's obituary for everyone's information.  We will certainly miss Archie at our meetings as he was a faithful attendee and served as our club Treasurer for over 7 years. http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/clarionledger/obituary.aspx?n=archie-lancaster&pid=171327218 .

This Saturday our turning demonstration will be a guest turner named Dennis Paullus, who is a member of the Mid-South Woodturners Guild located in Memphis, TN. You can find Dennis's gallery on http://dennispaullus.blogspot.com/ Dennis will demonstrate his way to turn an acorn box. As usual you will have an opportunity to learn by interacting with Dennis as he works.

Here is an excerpt from Dennis's email to Michael outlining the planned demonstration. "Hi Micheal, yes I can give you an outline of a full day demo. I do about 2hrs on an Acorn Box demo, so that can be the 9:30ish to 12:00time frame. I will start with basic turning prep, sharpening of tools, lathe safety ,box making in general and then the Acorn box. Depends on how the demo goes I might have to carve the box after lunch. I was thinking of exploring carving in more depth after lunch anyway. Porbably show how I lay out and carve my Hollow Vessels. I will show the different types of carving tools and techniques I use for carving and texturing.. Most of my carving techniques are fairly simple  and use few tools, so most people can duplicate them."

We will also have a raffle and ask you to bring any tools, wood, books, videos, etc. you find just taking up space at your place and donate them to the raffle. Money raised will be used toward the purchase of new DVDs, equipment, etc. for the club.

As always, you are encouraged to bring extra turning wood you can't use and share with others having a need for same. Also, if you know of an available wood source and would like some assistance in harvesting, you are sure to find someone who would like to help.  You have a choice of giving away the wood or hopefully donating it to the club's raffle

Please don't forget to bring examples of your turned work for show and Tell.  This is always enjoyable and we learn from seeing and hearing about other members work, especially when you bring pieces that didn't turn out as planned.  A lot of free wood found a new home at the last several meetings, so let’s see how some of it is being used.

We will appreciate your dues for renewal for calendar year 2014 at your earliest convenience. As you know, Gerald is also our web master so you can stay up to date by checking the web site.  http://www.magnoliawoodturners.org/

As member of MWI you are encouraged to become a member of our national organization, the American Association of Woodturners (AAW). Details can be obtained at this meeting. Visit their website: http://www.woodturner.org/  It is money well spent whether you are a beginner or above and we need to support them because they support MWI. I guess it is safe to say by now that no one from our club plans to attend the AAW Symposium in Phoenix, AZ next month.

Call someone or just show up there not later than 8:30 a.m.!  I will be happy to get the word out if you live in another location and are interested in forming a carpool, just send me the details and I will include them next time. Remember, if you are not the driver in a carpool, probably you should offer to kick in a few bucks to pay towards the gas.

Member Lamar Kelly invites you to check out his Facebook site featuring WMI meetings photos and albums.  He has it set up so anyone can view it whether or not you have a Facebook account.  You can go to your favorite search engine and type in Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. You can also cut and paste this link to get there: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Magnolia-Woodturners-Inc/229435957117655 . Thanks Lamar!

Our meetings take place at the COPIAH-LINCOLN COMMUNITY COLLEGE, SIMPSON CO.  CENTER.   This facility is on the East side of US 49, (but cannot be seen from the highway) between Mendenhall and Magee. If you are driving south, you will see an information sign on the right shoulder of US 49 and that is when you turn left (East) at the crossover and into the driveway. If you see Simpson Legion Lake on your left, then you have passed it. If you are driving north and pass the lake, look for a complementary sign showing you to take the next right.

 Hello Woodturners,

This is to remind you about the meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) next Saturday morning July 19, 2014.

The turning demonstration will be about basic and advanced turning with bowl gouges.  Bowl gouges come in several shapes and sizes and to use them safely and effectively, you need to find the size(s) and shape(s) that suites you as an individual.  The purpose of the demonstrations will be to give you the opportunity to explore and determine that you are making the most efficient use of the tool.  Of course, attending demonstrations and one-to-one teaching beats self-taught or trial and error every time, and a properly sharpened tool makes it much more fun. Everyone is encouraged to bring their bowl gouges to the meeting for hands own instructions on sharpening and cutting with your own tool.

As always, you are encouraged to bring extra turning wood you can't use and share with others having a need for same. Also, if you know of an available wood source and would like some assistance in harvesting, you are sure to find someone who would like to help.  President Michael Frazier told me that he and Treasurer Gerald Lawrence, by chance, found a large source of fresh cut Bradford Pear and River Birch wood and will be bringing one or more truck loads to the meeting to give to everyone attending. Bowl gouges love to cut these two woods!

I spoke with member Bill Hunt today and  he says he is experiencing a good recovery from his heart surgery July 2, 2014 in Jackson.  We all look forward to seeing Bill back with us at our meetings

Please don't forget to bring examples of your turned work for Show and Tell.  This is always enjoyable and we learn from seeing and hearing about other members’s work, especially when you bring pieces that didn't turnout as planned.  A lot of free wood found a new home at the last several meetings, so let’s  see how some of it is being used.

If you know of a particular woodturning related DVD or CD you think should be in our library please let one of our officers know and we will get it.

Hello Woodturners,

This is to remind you about the meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) next Saturday morning August 16. For all of you who wish to visit our meetings but don't know where to come, I am including my blurb near the end of this message to help you find it.

We will start the meeting at 9:30 a.m. but, as usual, the door will be open earlier so come have coffee, begin socializing and help set up.  Meetings usually end early to mid afternoon. Bring a guest!!

Our meeting demonstration this month will be presented by Joseph Voda from Mid South Woodturners Guild in Memphis TN.  The title is: Procrastinators Christmas-in-August Ornament Demonstration.  He will show us his methods for making small ornaments, very quickly, from just about any type of wood.  Some ornaments he can make are similar to the familiar "Inside Out" ornaments that turners have been making for years, but his method simplifies and speeds up the process considerably by using a solid piece of wood and drilling the openings.

The Star Bond Glue order will be distributed at the Saturday meeting to the following members:
Glue Order: $30
Terry J. $30
Joe Dove $30
John Stenmark. $30
Phil B. $30

Please arrange to have someone pick up your order if you cannot make to this meeting, Thanks.

Hello Woodturners,

This is to remind you about the meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) next Saturday morning, September 20.  Directions to the meeting can be found below.

We will start the meeting at 9:30 a.m. but, as usual, the door will be open earlier so come have coffee, begin socializing and help set up.  Meetings usually end early to mid afternoon. You can stay up to date by checking the web site.  http://www.magnoliawoodturners.org/
Bring a guest!!

Our meeting this month will be a “sharpening workshop” and you are invited to bring any of your woodturning gouges, skews, etc. and learn how they can be sharpened on many of the sharpening gigs currently being used by woodturners. Examples are: Tim Pace will demonstrate a belt sander system, Michael Frazer will demonstrate a new diamond coated wheel rig, Terry Tjader will demonstrate the water cooled wheel by “Tormek”, Gerald Lawrence will demonstrate the One Way Wolverine system and a couple of other systems he has. This will enlighten you and hopefully help if you are looking for a better and easier way to get tools cutting the way they are intended.  Sharpening actually can be fun!

We will have our “Quarterly Auction” to raise money for purchasing additional and more current DVD’s for our lending library.  We will be including in the auction all of our VHS video tapes from the library, in two lots. You will also have an opportunity to win the Acorn Box turned by Dennis Paullus, member of the Mid-South Woodturners Guild, at our June meeting; and the Christmas Ornament turned by Joseph Voda,  also from the Mid South Woodturners Guild, at our August meeting.  We ask you to bring any tools, wood, books, videos, etc. you find just taking up space at your place and donate them to the raffle.  The club is looking for your help in selecting the DVDs you would like to see in our library and you can do this by jotting down your list and passing it to Raymond, or an officer.

We will vote on the proposed and seconded amendment to our bylaws which will restrict the number of consecutive terms elected officers may serve to not more than two.

Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. elections are usually held at the last meeting of the calendar year but this November we will be hosting the internationally known Stuart Batty at that meeting and expect a number of guest from other clubs, etc.. In order to not take away time from the demonstration, a tentative plan is to have a nominating committee, appointed by the current President, develop a slate of proposed candidates before the end of this year and the actual election to take place at the January 2015 meeting with 2014 paid members allowed to vote.

Member Raymond Mars did step forward and volunteered to put our library in order and performing the steps requested last month.

“1. Do a complete inventory of the DVD library (no books...DVDs only),
 2. Update the library cards and DVDs with numbers to match,
 3. Provide past due list (check out date , title, members name), and
 4. Research and recommend additional titles that need to be purchased and added to our library. provide cost estimate. “

(Thank you Raymond !)

Please don't forget to bring examples of your turned work for “Show and Tell”.  This agenda item is always one of the highlights of our meetings.

Hello Woodturners,

This is to remind you about the meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) next Saturday morning, November 15, 2014.  Directions to the meeting can be found below.

This is a special meeting because we will have the world famous Stuart Batty as our guest demonstrator for the day.  This Saturday promises be one of the most interesting demonstrations Magnolia Woodturners has been privileged to host.  If you are not familiar with his videos and tools seen on the Internet, you can do a search with your search engine.  You can also download free software from vimeo.com and view about 34 instructional videos related to Stuart and his tool company, B Tools  Stuart will not be selling his tools at this meeting so don't be disappointed.  Briefly, Stuart was born in England and began turning at a very early age and followed his father, Alan Batty, who was also a very famous woodturner.  He is not typical, so be prepared.

We will start the meeting at 8:45 a.m. which is different from our usual time . The door will be open earlier so come have coffee, and begin socializing. The cost at the door for current members of Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. will be only $25 and all others will be charged $35. Lunch is own your own.

Those attending the workshop with Stuart at Michael shop Sunday who have not paid already should be prepared to pay at this meeting, this coming Saturday.

The meeting will be devoted to the demonstration unless anyone has news or announcements to share with members.  We expect a good turnout to see this special demonstrator, so please make plans to attend, have a good time, and bring a guest.

In order to not take away time from the demonstration, the election of club officers; normally held in November; will not be held.
The tentative plan is to have a nominating committee, appointed by the current President, develop a slate of proposed candidates before the end of this year and the actual election to take place at the January 2015 meeting with 2014 paid members allowed to vote.  Michael Frazier will not be available for next year as President because he is going back to work and likely will not be available on Saturdays.

For the Jackson area, Carpooling is the new way to go!  Just show up not later than 8:00
