2015 Newsletters

                                                                                   June 17, 2015

Hello Woodturners,

This is to remind you about the meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) this Saturday morning, June 20, 2015 at the usual location.  Directions to the meeting can be found below.

We will start the meeting at 9:30 a.m.. The door will be open before then, so come have coffee and begin socializing.  See if you can bring a guest to the meeting.

This month member Bill Hunt will fully demonstrate how he turns his pepper mills.   Bill has been one of our favorite demonstrators over the years. He has demonstrated in great detail how to turn turkey calls, duck calls, pepper mills, how to turn a wood sphere, how to prepare and sharpen scrapers,  and probably other things I don't recall right-off.  The items he turns are of top notch quality and appearance and he usually has a waiting market for them.

Please don't forget to bring examples of your turned work for how and Tell  This agenda item is always one of the highlights of our meetings.

Treasurer and Web Master Gerald Lawrence called today to say that the CBN wheels shipment has arrived and those can be picked up from him at this meeting.  If you ordered one and will not be at this meeting, you need to let Gerald know before Saturday if you want it picked up at the meeting by a friend.

If you loaned an item(s) to be put on display in the Brandon Library, Gerald also will have them at this meeting for you to take back,  Of  course, he would like for your to pick these items up so he does not have to store them.

Take a few minutes to browse the materials in the library this month and find something to sign-out and take home.   Please remember to return borrowed Library items as we do have an excellent selection of items covering nearly all types of woodturning, plus several other related topics, for paid up members.

Please remember to sign in and out all items as it is an honor system and this is the only way we can keep up with items.  Ask someone if you have any questions, please.  The club is looking for your help in selecting new DVDs.  You can do this by jotting down your list and handing it any club officer.  There will not be a raffle at this meeting  but if you have extra wood to share please bring it.

President Sammy Long and member Charles White have exclusive displays of some of their work in the eorge Berrygallery at the Mississippi Craft Center in Ridgeland, MS this month.  Try to get by to see these collections of works by these two of Mississippi finest wood artist.

Don't forget to keep checking our web site and to send Gerald items you would like to have uploaded to the site.                     http://www.magnoliawoodturners.org/

For the Jackson area, Carpooling is the new way to go!  Just show up not later than 8:30 Saturday morning at Sutherlands Building Materials store located at 717 Hwy 80 East Pearl, MS 39208.  Remember, if you are not the driver in a carpool, probably you should offer to kick in a few bucks to pay towards the gas.
Secretary Lamar Kelly invites you to check out his Facebook site featuring WMI meetings photos and albums.  He has it set up so anyone can view it whether or not you have a Facebook account, and he updates it each month.  You can go to your favorite search engine and type in agnolia Woodturners, Inc You can also click on or cut and paste this link to get there: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Magnolia-Woodturners-Inc/229435957117655 . This is to remind you about the meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) Saturday week;  or August 15, 2015  at 9:30 a.m.  This meeting will be at the usual location and directions can be found below.

This month we are pleased to host one of the legends of woodturning, Nick Cook.  I know most of you at know at least something about the good things he has done for the American Association Of Woodturners, and encouragement of  woodturners.  Please check out his website: http://www.nickcookwoodturner.com/ .  This a one day demonstration so we will not follow the usual meeting agenda but will be an excellent experience for all woodturners.  There will be a charge to members and guest to offset out expenses in hosting this event. Members will be asked to pay $25 and guest will pay $40 for the day

Hello Woodturners,

This is to remind you about the meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) this Saturday morning, August 15, 2015  at the usual location.  Directions to the meeting can be found below.

As announced earlier, this meeting is a special demonstration by a special professional production woodturner from Marietta, Georgia: Nick Cook.  You will learn a lot by watching and listening to Nick because he can show you how it is done.  Over his long career, he has demonstrated at nearly every major regional, national and international turning event; as well as probably most of the AAW affiliated clubs, like ours.  This is certainly a good demonstration to bring guest or a new and potential woodturner and help our club. Please check out his website: http://www.nickcookwoodturner.com/

We will start the meeting at 9:30 a.m. The door will be open before then, so come have coffee and begin socializing.  Expect the demonstration to last until, but not later than, 4:30 p.m. as he intends to turn 18 objects.  We have to have the room cleaned and vacated no later than 5:00 p.m.

Unfortunately, in order for the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. to pay for these demonstrations we have to collect a fee from everyone who attends.  The charge for paid-up members will be only $25 and for guest the charge will be $40.  We also, ask members to donate $5 for the coffee and the surcharge for the room.  It is going to be a full and fun day so please make plans to attend.

You may bring examples of your turned work for how  (There is not going to be time for ell

If you have followed protocol when checking out material from the club library, then there is a record in the files and we need them returned.  Most of you, I am sure, will be surprised to learn how many CDs, DVDs and other things have been removed from the club library for extended periods. The club wants to continue to furnish a library but we need your help to get the missing items back to us.
Hello Woodturners,

This is to remind you about our meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) this coming Saturday, September 19, 2015, at 9:30 a.m.  This meeting will be at the usual location and directions can be found below.

Our President, Sammy Long, sent a note saying that he and Dr. Tommy James will be attending the b>SouthWest Association of Turners (SWAT) Waco, TXand will not make this meeting.

Vice President, Tim Pace will be running the meeting and also has the demonstration. Tim has been making and turning various fishing lures for quite a long time. He will start out with the basics of air brushing i.e., how to control paint with air pressure, painting lines and controlling overspray. He will demonstrate how to apply paint to your wood turnings. He will turn a Top Water Lure and show the steps in painting them with the air brush. He will explain the different types of paint, what works and what doesn't on different applications. We will soon know we have someone in our club we can call on when we want to know about air brushing our turned wood and turning fishing lures.

Sammy told me earlier that he had an inquiry by a local representative of the Boy Scouts Of  America about possibly inviting volunteer wood turners and wood workers willing to demonstrate live on a Saturday during their summer camp next month. No other details at this time, but I can tell you that it is a lot of fun to do.

Please don't forget to bring examples of your turned work for how and Telland, also bring any spare wood for turning that you won't be needing for those not so lucky.  Another reminder is to return any material(s) borrowed from our library.

A repeat of a message from Gerald Lawrence:  ry the Magnolia Woodturners website if you want to see yourself and others work back as far as 2011. Hello Woodturners,

This is to remind you about our meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) this coming Saturday, October 17, 2015, at 9:30 a.m.  This meeting will be at the usual location and directions can be found below.

Last Saturday several of our members demoed for the Boy Scouts at the Hood Scout Reservation near Hazlehurst, MS and it went very well. They made a lot of contacts and were asked to do some demos for individual clubs in the future.  There were 700 scouts present and the traffic was pretty steady. A big Thanks for those that helped out with this. Lamar Kelly, Gerald Lawrence, Tim Pace, Phil Brown and Sammy Long had a great time.

Important: The club agnoliaWoodturnersoriginal banners need to be located. Please let someone know if you can help.

Last month, Tommy James and Sammy went to the Turning Southern Style Symposium in Dalton, Ga.  Sammy sat in on a demo with John Lucas making his turned hand mirrors.  For our next meeting Sammy will be demonstrating this hand mirror and then adding some relief carving on the back. These will make great Christmas gifts you will be able to make them ahead of time.

We will also have an auction so everyone please look around your shop and bring unused wood, tools, turning books, etc. because the more items we have the better the auction will be and your chance of winning go up.  As usual, ticket prices will be $1 each or 6 for $5.

Please don't forget to bring examples of your turned work for how and Telland another reminder is to return any material(s) borrowed from our library.

Because we have not located the club banners it was necessary to purchase two more for the BSA demonstration last Saturday.  I are certain the old ones are lying around in someone closet who did not realize they were needed for future outside demonstrations,

                                                                       November 17, 2015

Hello Woodturners,

This is to remind you about our meeting of the Magnolia Woodturners, Inc. (MWI) this coming Saturday, November 21, 2015 at 9:30 a.m.  This will be five weeks since we last got together and the last meeting of the year. This is also the meeting where we hold our election for club officers for the coming year, so here is hoping you will make it.  This meeting will be at the usual location and directions can be found below.

Our demonstrator will be member Terry Tjader.  Terry will demonstrate: Dremel Engraving,  use of  Dremel Rotary Carving to enhance woodturnings, and Pyrography.   He will also enlighten us on how he uses paint for further enhancement.

He would like to have everyone that has any of the above mentioned equipment, of any brand, to bring it so we can do some hands-on practice.  If you have a woodturning that you would like him to work on to get you started and then you finish the work, he will be glad to do so.  If not, you may bring a small flat board to practice on and this would be fine. If we don't have things the membership brings for hands-on we can go to lunch or do “Show and Tell”, as time permits. Depending on the participation by attendees we can fill any extra time with discussion and/or more hands-on.  Terry’s tools are all electric so if anyone brings air tools they would need to bring a little compressor.

We do have an election of officers for the coming calendar year planned for this meeting. A slate of willing members to serve next year will be presented when nominations are invited. For anyone else interested in one of the positions to be filled nominations may be made at that time.  Any member in good standing is eligible to become a candidate. The positions to be filled are the President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary.

In the category of club business, dues for calendar year 2016 may be paid, beginning at this meeting.  Dues are unchanged at thirty-five dollars ($35) for the coming year and you are reminded that we pay dues by the “calendar” year and everyone’s dues expire at the end of each year.  The club does not meet during the month of December of any year due to the holidays.

Important: The club’s “MagnoliaWoodturners” original banners need to be located. Please let someone know if you can help.

Please don't forget to bring examples of your turned work for “Show and Tell” and another reminder is to return any material(s) borrowed from our library.

Gerald Lawrence will discuss a possible club project called “Beads of Courage” (BOC)  http://www.beadsofcourage.org/pages/woodturners.html
BOC is a program for critically sick children to provide the children with beads to mark progress in their therapy. The BOXES are to provide them with a place to keep the beads. Specifications are at BOC website to be found above.  President Sammy Long learned at the SWAT symposium last month that most symposiums are supporting this program and American Woodturner had an article on this recently. http://www.aawforum.org/vbforum/showthread.php?11653-SWAT-Beads-of-Courage .  Gerald has taken the initiative to contact Blair Batson Hospital and they started using the program this year in the Cystic Fibrosis program. They have 84 patients currently and not all of them participate in BOC. This could be an exceptional chance for us to give community support and make some kids happy. More pictures can be found on the AAW website.

I understand there are several items Nick Cook turned during his demonstration remaining and we plan to have a silent auction as Nick intended for the benefit of our club.

This is a good opportunity to clean out your shop, get rid of extra books, etc. because we will be having another raffle.  Gerald mentioned he has several useful items for the raffle, including an unopened grinding wheel, and a drill press. Raffle tickets will be $1 each and six for $5.  Any and all items you wish to donate will be appreciated.

A repeat of a message from Gerald:  “Try the Magnolia Woodturners website if you want to see yourself and others work back as far as 2011.
